Thabo, Pitso, Birds born in a cage think flying is an illness, 2021. Found objects on couch cushion and wood, dimensions variable, longest size 1200mm. Provenance: The artist.

Pitso’s work is very personal, abstract, and is mostly about social conditions in everyday life. Through metaphors, he tries to de-construct the social and personal meaning of objects.Pitso also explores the role of different forms of propaganda in society - how social conditioning affects the way we are living. This he does by juxtaposing images and objects that have functional and dysfunctional relations to each other. His minimalist approach to art is neither about nationality, cultural- or social group, but about individuality.

The works on paper were created during a time when I was free to travel and engage socially with different people. The trail left behind, and new adventures. All the works are a reminder of the wrong turns and the right ones. Having to get closer with/to people, having the ability to engage in heartfelt narratives that form part and parcel of our daily realities and having to choose how one numbs or excellerates their needs to be heard and felt.

My work seeks to engage on issues of self purpose, who am I in this concrete jungle. Survival tactics requires one to read between the lines and adapt. The lines on my face reveal the paths I have travelled, experienced both good and bad hospitality. What is my role in this society?? What will happen today? Where will I go now? How will I feel then? It's a pleasure of racing raging questions triggered by my social observation. Going around in circles and drawing lines that can either set your soul free or the opposite of having to pay a fee to get your soul back and being one with the people.

Thabo Pitso was born in 1982 in the small township of Itsoseng near Lichtenburg, North West Province, South Africa. He discovered his love of art from an early age. In 2007, he decided to study Fine Art at the Tshwane University of Technology, where he obtained his B-Tech in 2010. Thabo Pitso lives and works in Pretoria.
