MORE ON THE ARTIST
SAUDADE (Portuguese)/Bittersweet of Life and Art
The artwork I have been making the previous year deals with the intersection of past and future subjective emotions and is in reflection of the current human condition through the individual experience of being alive in a time of isolation, chaos, and uncertainty. My work attempts to juxtapose the colliding feelings of helplessness and fear, with an awakening sense of calm and optimism that slowly emerges from this forced interruption of our lives. My work intends to highlight the intersection of these emotions – depicting fields of joyous awakening of nature while interweaved with complexed disruption of alternative medium to create a visual and emotional language that captures the feeling of being alive today. The relationship between the different mediums and their environment is to a sense of disorientation; a sort of test of how time can shift both physical and mentally, and therefore distort our sense of space and time.
Rosa holds a Bachelor of Visual Art Degree from Unisa. She works in a variety of media, including painting, found objects, fibre, paper and installation art. Her work is concerned with the narratives of the human condition and nature and how parts contribute to the whole. In order to reflect this in her art, she brings disparate materials together such as found objects/plant material, resin, charcoal, paint, pastels, and beeswax that create her personal language.
Rosa has had work accepted for the Sasol New Signatures in 2009 and 2011. In 2010,2011 and 2012 she had work selected for the Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards. She has also participated in group exhibitions at St Lorient Fashion and Art Gallery in 2010, 2011, 2012 and Fried Contemporary in Pretoria 2013.
Rosa is recently moved to George and is part of the CAP (Contemporary Art Practice) group and was part of the group exhibitions in Plettenburg Bay 2017), KKNK 2018, Absa JHB April 2018, Knysna Art Ass.
