  • MORE ON THE ARTIST

    ARTIST STATEMENT

The exploration of the connectedness between humankind and nature is central to my artistic practice.  This is reflected in my fascination with water and weather, which has been the central theme in my work over the past several years.  Our bodies are made up of mostly water - an absolute manifestation of our connection to nature.  This particular body of work is inspired by my observations of clouds whilst lying down on the ground.  Using a horizontal perspective can be seen as deconstructing the notion of humankind as having dominion over nature.  It is a way of seeking a closer binding to the earth and reflecting the need for reintegration of humanity into the community of life.

    ARTIST BIO

Mary-Jane Morris has practiced as an environmental scientist for around 30 years and has been painting seriously since 1996.  Having moved from Cape Town in 2014, she now lives and works on a nature farm outside Sedgefield. She has developed her art practice through self-study together with regular classes and workshops, both locally and internationally. Given her environmental background, Mary-Jane’s art is concerned with the human/nature interface. She has participated in several group exhibitions both whilst living in Cape Town and since moving to the Garden Route.  In 2020, her exhibition “Finding Water” was featured online by the Elfriede Dreyer Gallery.  Her work can be found in private collections in South Africa, Nigeria, Germany, the U.K and U.S.A.
