edg2020 showcases contemporary South African art of established and emerging artists. The curated artists engage with the diverse realities and experiences of South Africans. We are not so much interested in work that confirms the status quo – technically and idea-wise – but in work that challenges the norm; carries personal insight and conviction; and is stimulating so that it will continue to inspire awe and joy in its owners and viewers. Imperatively, we value work of good technical quality by artists who sustainably produce work so that the promise of good investment value lingers. Although our primary function is the curating of our own exhibitions, we also source, curate and install artworks for corporates, embassies, private homes and art festivals. We provide advice and inspection reports, as well as art brokering and acquisition advice to art collectors.
The Gallery functions mainly online and is run from a private home. Physical viewing times of exhibitions can be found on the exhibitions page. View dates and hours here. Covid has changed the way we live, work and play. Many people are working indefinitely from home and have no plans to return to an office environment. At edg2020 we have joined this new trend since we are convinced that when the private home becomes public through a 'home' gallery, it fills a niche and a need in the local art ecosystem. In the South African context, many art galleries have had to close doors or change the way they operate, due to the social and economic impact of covid; yet internationally modern African art is in high demand. A home gallery that functions online as well accommodates all worlds. In the domestic environment the intimacy of the 'less professional' home space allows for personal attention and advice beyond the impersonality of a commercial gallery or institution. It also induces a different experience of the art whereby the work can be visualised more productively for the home or office. We do everything in our power to provide good images of the work online, as well as to provide all details on the work and the artist. Not all the artworks are physically on exhibition at edg2020. To view work physically, open days are arranged over selected weekends as advertised. Personal appointments can be arranged when a buyer is seriously interested in a work.
